Fear & Greed Index in short

What does Fear & Greed Index show?

The pane shows the Liqwall Fear & Greed Index: one number from 0 to 100 for the chart coin, for BTC, ETH, SOL or for the whole market. The lower the number, the more fear there is in the market; the higher, the more greed. The scale has five zones: extreme fear, fear, neutral, greed and extreme greed. The value is updated every 15 minutes.

How to read Fear & Greed Index?

  • The number at the right edge of the pane and the word next to it are the current value of the index and its zone.
  • The line in the red and orange zones means the market is fearful; in the green zones it is greedy; the yellow middle is a calm state.
  • The colour of the line matches the zone the index was in on that candle.
  • Watch both the number and the path: an index that moves from fear to greed over several days tells of a change of mood.
  • On the daily chart the value of a candle is the index at its close.

How to use Fear & Greed Index?

  • Use it as a backdrop: what mood the market is in at the moment you make a decision.
  • Compare a coin with the market: put two indexes on the chart, its own and "Whole market", and see whether the coin is more fearful than the rest.
  • Extreme values describe the state of the market and do not tell where the price goes next: after them the market went both up and down.
  • An alert on the value of the index will tell you when the mood moves into another zone.

What do you often see on Fear & Greed Index?

  • Extreme fear shows up near bottoms noticeably more often than usual.
  • Greed does not mark tops.
  • After extreme readings there is no edge in the next price move: the index describes a state, not direction.
  • Extreme fear can last for weeks while price keeps falling.
